Eléonore | One Month Anniversary & a Giveaway!!

Hello again friends!

I realized something yesterday. Today, January the 4th, marks a month since I first released Eléonore to the world!

The past 30 days have been trying. Family issues arose on the 8th of December and changed the perspective I had. My focus shifted from my book to my loved ones and I don’t regret it.

With everything looking up now, I am excited to work on getting Eléonore noticed and to have her story entertain readers.

To celebrate a month of being published and the recent release of the physical copy, I thought it would be a good idea to host a giveaway! It’s open until January 12th! (that’s a week tomorrow!)

Eléonore Dormant’s life is a precarious balancing act: librarian by day, demon hunter by night and single mother around the clock. Each day brings its challenges and she brings her A-game. It helps that coffee and a bottle of painkillers are always in supply.

For six years, she’s protected the streets of Montreal from all manner of demons and the consequent evil that they would wreak on her city. But even a resumé like hers isn’t enough to prepare her for the unforeseen night when she becomes the hunted.

A sorcerer, an enigmatic Elder, has placed a hefty bounty on her head and the demons are eager to claim the reward for her capture. They bear down on her, disrupting her mode de vie and endangering her son’s life all in one fell swoop. But Eléonore is ready to fight whatever Hell deigns to send her way to save him. The path she pursues will lead her to new places and old faces.

One thing is certain, Eléonore’s about to get into a whole hellhole of trouble.

Eléonore | Book Playlist

Happy Thursday Friends,

It’s December 1st. Hard to believe we’re only a few weeks away from the end of 2016.

With Eléonore releasing this Sunday, I’m taking the liberty to share some trivia and excerpts with you.

Today, I’ve decided to share the playlist that I have created for it.

I filled the first third of the drive to Quebec City with tunes on my dad’s tapes and reminisced on the past. The combination of memories of old days hunting demons with him and sappy ‘80s ballads were enough to ease my frayed nerves. In its place, rose a nostalgic sentiment that dulled my senses.

I already have plans for a second volume for the next book, but that’s me getting ahead of myself ;P

Eléonore | An Excerpt

Happy Wednesday friends,

Can you believe it’s November 30th! Only one more day and then we’re in December. And then there’s only 24 days to Christmas and one month til 2017! Where has this year gone?

This Sunday, my debut novella Eléonore (The Iníonaofa Chronicles #1) releases to the world. In anticipation, I’m sharing the opening paragraphs. I hope it’s an ample teaser 🙂

There were demons to kill, but first I needed a cup of coffee.

The nearest café offered a variety of frappés, lattés, and mochas, but all I needed was a good strong, dark roast black from Canada’s oldest coffee shop. An extra three blocks of walking was worth the bitter brew that steeled my nerves and jolted my brain. One sip was enough to get the juices flowing. Three more and I could feel the anticipation building. Ready and willing to slit some throats.

It was a little after nine o’clock in the evening and the night life of Downtown Montreal was quickening. Saint Catherine Street was a crowded hub of the young and yearning. Clubs, bars, pubs: those were the places that called their name. I couldn’t hear what the revellers did; the only voice in my range beckoned me to the open area of Dominion Square.

It was a rowdier crowd that gathered there. Druggies and drunks. The putrid stench had my nose wrinkling and eyes rolling. At least the demons I fought were physical.

Eyes surveyed me as I went. Maybe it was the short red hair that caught their attention; it definitely wasn’t the hazel brown eyes. I didn’t have the Marilyn bombshell body that would turn heads either. It could have been the long brown coat that I wore over my burgundy dress, grey leggings, and tall black boots.

Or maybe I was just being paranoid and over-observant. It could sometimes be a side effect of the job, and tonight I was especially on edge.

Most nights, I stalked the streets trying to detect evil with what some would call a sixth sense. Tonight, however, Sinéad had warned me that something bad was going to go down. It was rare for her to give me a missive, preferring to offer only spiritual aid, so chances were high that something significant would take place this evening. The thought of a big brawl was exhilarating.

Stay tuned for tomorrow. There’ll be a new post to share either the characters or Eléonore’s playlist. Not sure which yet. Any preferences?

Eléonore Release Date and ARCs!

Happy Tuesday friends!

I’m changing up my normal posts this week to bring you a very special announcement. I have set a release date for Eléonore.

DECEMBER 4TH 2016!

That’s right. A little less than two weeks. But everything’s come together so very well and I can’t hold back any longer. Plus, it will be like an early birthday present for me.

It still feels wholly surreal to me. I can’t believe that I’ll finally be published. Like many of you, it’s been a dream a long time in the making. To see it finally realized… well, I’m actually tearing up thinking about it, so that’s what it means to me 💗

But enough about me! Because today’s post is also about you. My readers. My friends. You have been a great support and encouragement for me through this past year and I am grateful for every kind word and gesture that has kept me moving in this direction. With American Thanksgiving drawing near, I feel it apropos to express the gratitude I have for each of you. I am blessed. Truly blessed.

If everything works well, I will have Eléonore up for pre-order by the end of the weekend. It will only be available as an e-book to start, with the paperback going up for sale later in the month.

Before wrapping up this post, I also want to say that I’m offering Advance Reader Copies for my novella. If you’re at all interested in getting a copy now in exchange for an honest review, feel free to leave a comment below or DM me on twitter (faith_therivens) or send me an e-mail at faithrivens.writer(at)gmail.com. I’ll be sending those out by Friday latest.

Here’s the blurb again:

Okay, I think that’s it for today’s post. Thank you again for sharing this journey with me friends. And keep your eyes peeled for the cover reveal 🙂

I hope you all had a lovely week and that this one is just as wonderful. Let me know what you’ve been up to or what you’re hoping to accomplish. I’m here for you, cheering you on towards every goal.

Eléonore Blurb Reveal

Hi friends 🙂

It’s late Sunday evening here, and I have to admit that it’s been a rather dismal weekend. I intend to make sure this new week is a better one.

This post will be a brief one. Its purpose is to, as promised, present the blurb for my novella, Eléonore.

I finished my final edits and am sending it off to a proofreader tomorrow. Meanwhile, I’m waiting for another draft of my cover. Hopefully I’ll be able to reveal that this week!

That December release is looking ever more probable!

Now, to the blurb!

Hope you all have had a beautiful weekend! Stay well, friends!

NaNoWriMo2016 in Review | The First

Hello friends!

On this Monday, the first of NaNoWriMo 2016, I’m changing up the usual Week in Review post to match 🙂

At the moment my total is at 8,951 words. It’s lower than it should be, but that’s got a lot to do with life and editing Eléonore! The latter is going extremely well, by the way. I should be done the edits today and I’ll be reading it once more through for any mistakes before sending it to my proofreader. Drawing closer to publication and it’s hard to believe that this is actually happening!

But back to The Desert Knight — my NaNoWriMo novel. I’m loving writing it right now and discovering my characters. Parvana is still developing as a main character and sometimes I find that I’m writing her with too much of Eléonore’s edge. When I find that happening, I make notes to go back and clean up her dialogue and inner musings. It’s happening less and less as I’m becoming more familiar with her personality. So that’s good at least.

It’s a first draft, so I’m attacking it as such, writing what comes without much filter, but I’m keeping notes as I go for problems in plot that I’m already noticing and scenes where I overstay my visit. I think one of my biggest issues right now is bringing the setting to life. The desert is such a gorgeous space to use, but I don’t think I’m doing it justice. To help, I have two books on my November TBR that are set in the desert: The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley and Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed. Does anyone have any other suggestions for fantasy novels with a desert setting?

With edits finishing up on Eléonore this week, I’m hoping to turn more of my attention to The Desert Knight and hitting 20k before the week’s end. That’s the dream, in any case 🙂

For now, how about a small excerpt:

They knew me as Rikalasar. I was proud to be Rika’s serve, but I was also afraid of the reverence I garnered for it.

Rikalasar was the mask of duty that I wore at night, to serve the god that had saved my life. My true name was Parvana. At one time I had been called Shara (daughter), Sestrys (sister), Nevalyn (niece). At one time I had been called Kivashik (kin killer).

– The Desert Knight. Faith Rivens. 2016.

How are your NaNoWriMo endeavours proving? Are you on goal? Falling behind? Share your experience! I’d love to hear about it.

And remember to believe in your stories, friends, and in your selves! You can do amazing things if you do ❤

May inspiration flow like ink upon your quill,

Announcement Time | Nearing Achievement of a 2016 Goal

Happy Friday, friends!

I hope you’re all doing well, surviving NaNo if you decided to embrace the madness 😉

I have a big announcement. It’s the kind of announcement I’ve been waiting to make for a while… and when I say a while, I mean years.

Ready?

Wait for it!

I am officially self-publishing my debut novella!

That’s right! I’ve been working a little crazily and I didn’t want to say anything until I could be sure, but with positive feedback from my beta readers I’ve decided to take the proverbial leap!

So December 2016, I’ll be releasing Eléonore as an ebook on Amazon, with hopefully a paperback version coming late December or early January!

Wait a minute while I pinch myself ;P

This post right now is probably coming off as a little rant of insanity, so apologies, but I’ve been excited to share this news for some time and I don’t know how to properly articulate just how pleased I am that I’m actually finally taking the plunge and sharing my first story with the world.

The next few weeks are going to be a little hectic, so bear with me if I disappear for long periods of time. It’s a lot to juggle, but I have such a supportive team behind me, which includes you, my fellow readers!

So many of my friends have published their books this year and they’ve inspired me with their perseverance, so to all of you — and you know who you are — thank you for sharing your journey  with me because I don’t think I’d be here right now if it wasn’t for you.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be revealing my blurb and cover for my little novella, as well as a more precise publication date. Early December is the aim, but I still need to finalize one thing before I can be sure of making this self-imposed deadline. When I know, you’ll know. 😉

For now, let me just remind you that Eléonore is an urban fantasy set in Montreal. It’s a novella of about 40k words and features Eléonore, a single mother who stacks shelves by day and hunts demons by night. Always the hunter, things get tricky when she discovers there’s a bounty on her head…

I’m signing off now! Have to get back to some last minute edits and writing my NaNoWriMo story (5565 words so far)!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Take care and keep pursuing your dreams!

May inspiration flow like ink upon your quill,

Faith   quill-ink
