Eléonore Dormant’s life is a precarious balancing act: librarian by day, demon hunter by night and single mother around the clock. Each day brings its challenges and she brings her A-game. It helps that coffee and a bottle of painkillers are always in supply.

For six years, she’s protected the streets of Montreal from all manner of demons and the consequent evil that they would wreak on her city. But even a resumé like hers isn’t enough to prepare her for the unforeseen night when she becomes the hunted.

A sorcerer, an enigmatic Elder, has placed a hefty bounty on her head and the demons are eager to claim the reward for her capture. They bear down on her, disrupting her mode de vie and endangering her son’s life all in one fell swoop. But Eléonore is ready to fight whatever Hell deigns to send her way to save him. The path she pursues will lead her to new places and old faces.

One thing is certain, Eléonore’s about to get into a whole hellhole of trouble.

Crafting the Series | Part One – In Pursuit of Creativity

Hello friends!

Happy Thursday to you and welcome to this the first in a planned biweekly (i.e. posting every second week) blog series that will focus on my writing process with my debut urban fantasy, Eléonore.

Today’s post is just an introduction more than anything, an explanation of sorts as to what I plan to explore, and what I hope to accomplish with it.

If you’re ready to embark on this journey with me – and I hope you are – then grab yourself a nice dark roast coffee and a Pouding Chômeur (that’s what Eléonore would recommend anyway 😊) and let’s get started.

In the long run…

What is the purpose of this series? Well, there might be a few purposes actually, but I’ll stick to the three main ones, shall I?

  1. To share with you the writing process that took me from idea to publication and beyond.
  2. To help inspire you on your own writing journey.
  3. To give back to the writing community that encouraged and supported me.

The craft of writing is a personal one. I believe that everyone has a method that works best for them and that, while those methods may coincide with the methods of others, no two people have the exact same process.

Why then am I sharing my writing habits with you?

Not so that you’ll make the exact same journey that I did. But so that you might find inspiration as you embark on and travel along your own writing path. Whether you’re on the final edit of your draft or just starting out with a new idea, I hope that my adventure might give you new insight or resonate with you in a way that can help you as you shape your own story.

And if nothing else, perhaps I will amuse you with these behind the scene anecdotes. 😉

Unfurl the blueprints…

I’ve been planning this series for quite some time. In mid-December, the idea came to me. As I mentioned already, I wanted to give back to a community that helped me when I was trapped in a rut. Sharing insight seemed like the best way I could do it. So I devised a plan, choosing which facets of writing I would want to focus on. Believe me when I say it’s extensive…

Here are just some of the topics I’ll be touching on…

  1. But which idea do I choose?
  2. Playing Sims on paper – building your world
  3. Silencing your Inner Editor… it’s the first draft after all
  4. The Novella – a short film for writers
  5. Beta Readers – let go that ego
  6. Inevitably, they will judge it by your cover
  7. Etc., etc., etc.

I think you get the idea. But here’s the thing friends. As much as I have this blueprint, I am a plantser in life as much as I am in writing. So if there’s any specific topic you want me to cover, you let me know and I’ll throw it in where I can. This is for you, after all – maybe a bit for me – and I want YOU to get the most out of this as you can.

Formatting with Style

So now you know what I’ll be covering. But how will I be covering it? Here’s what I’m hoping it will look like from week to week.

I’ll start with my process, the steps I took with Eléonore, the experience that I had, whatever little anecdotes and stories I can share with you that relate to the week’s topic.

Then I’ll look at the topic from a more general point of view. Looking at how it fits into the larger process. Looking at how you might want to tackle it.

For example, our topic in two weeks will be Choosing an Idea. How I chose to write Eléonore is actually a long story that starts with a girl making a vow to herself five years ago and ends with a girl realizing she only has four months left to keep a promise to herself. I’ll share the story of it with you, a story that’s unique to me and then I’ll explore with you the different ways you might stumble across that idea that sparks a passion in you, the story your ready to create, the story you need to create.

And then there will be a PDF for you to use. Somewhere you can build your ideas, if you so choose. Some will bear more pointed questions. Some will be geared more towards helping you develop character histories, plot structures, etc. It’ll depend on the topic.

As with the above, if there’s something you’d like me to focus on in a PDF, let me know, and I’ll arrange to include it.

PURSUING YOUR CREATIVITY

Phew! Still with me 😅

I had originally planned to start today on building an idea, but I recently started reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic, which inspired me to start on a topic that precedes even the conception of an idea… That is…

DECIDING TO WRITE!

The universe buries strange jewels deep within us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them.
Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic

The first part of Gilbert’s book on creative living is devoted to courage. In it, she discusses the anxieties that hold us back from pursuing the creativity, those that are innate within us. Things like fear of failure, fear of being rejected, fear of being unoriginal, fear of judgement for the choice of writing… And the list goes on.

This section resonated with me, because I recognized that these were the chains that had held me back before Eléonore. I had been writing for fifteen years before the idea even came to me, but I was never able to share any of my stories with anyone and kept it close to my chest because I was afraid of how I would be received as an author. When I released this anxiety, I was able to devote myself to my writing. Not that the fear was gone. It was still there. But I decided that I had the courage to pursue my creativity despite it.

And you need to find that courage to. Whether you’re in the process of writing a book, published and working on your next one, or just starting out for the first time, chances are those anxieties are weighing on you. Maybe you’ve already discovered how brave you can be. Maybe you’re still looking for that bravery, that a-ha moment when you realize that you deserve better than to set limits for yourself.

Here’s what I’ve learned from my own experience. Life isn’t worth living in fear. If we let our anxieties hold us back, we’ll never experience the true wonders that life has to offer us. A leap of faith is sometimes demanded. And that goes for your writing as well. Trust in yourself in a bit, and be brave to pursue what makes you passionate.

You’ll be rewarded in the long run for it. Because you’ll have discovered just how brave you are. And that’s a lesson to take with you through life.

And once you decide that you’re brave enough to pursue your creativity, you can move on to finding that idea that motivates and inspires you and write the story in your heart.

Thanks for joining me on this first part of the journey, friends. What has your experience been with finding the courage to write? What are you hoping to gain from this series? Share in the comments 🙂

Eléonore & the Iníonaofa Chronicles | A Couple of Updates

Happy Thursday friends,

I’ll try to keep this post as short as possible. I just have a few announcements to share with you today concerning my debut urban fantasy novella Eléonore

What People are Saying…

It’s been over two months since Eléonore was published and I can’t express how pleased I am to see how warmly she’s been received. Here are snippets of reviews:

33113796This is Faith Rivens’ debut work, and she has burst onto the scene with a bang.

Eléonore was a wonderful read for so many reasons. There’s a lot of action, a great main character, and enough feelings to make any brick tear up!

I was particularly impressed by the natural character banter and strong character building that made this story feel remarkably effortless – a true pleasure to read.

Faith Rivens has a wonderful way with phrasing, sentence structure and story pace, and her dialogue is effortless.

I think Eléonore is the kind of character you can’t help but love. She’s a kick-ass heroine, not perfect but a strong-willed one.

If you enjoy urban fantasy, you should absolutely give Eléonore a try. I’m looking forward to further books from this author.

Seriously, everyone! These words warm my heart! I’m extremely grateful that she’s received as much positive feedback as she has. You never know when you put your first work forward what you’ll get in return. The support and encouragement is more than I dared to hope for!

COMING DISTRACTIONS!

This is the announcement I’m most excited to share with you. Starting in two weeks, I’ll be scheduling bimonthly posts (that’s every second week) about my process of writing Eléonore. I’ll go through the entire journey of it, from conception to publication and a bit beyond.

I benefited in the past from fellow writing bloggers who have shared their take on the craft and I hope to lend others the same inspiration and motivation to conceive their own ideas and write the story in their heart.

On top of this, I’m in the middle of preparing a bimonthly newsletter. It’s not ready yet, but with any luck it’ll be up in time to coincide with the first of my Eléonore writing posts. So keep a sharp eye. 🙂

A final note, I’m currently working on the sequel to Eléonore. It will be the full length novel in a planned quartet. Next week, I’ll share a title reveal and a bit more about the exciting plans I have for the Iníonaofa Chronicles!

Well, that’s it from me for right now. Stay well, dearest friends!

Eléonore | One Month Anniversary & a Giveaway!!

Hello again friends!

I realized something yesterday. Today, January the 4th, marks a month since I first released Eléonore to the world!

The past 30 days have been trying. Family issues arose on the 8th of December and changed the perspective I had. My focus shifted from my book to my loved ones and I don’t regret it.

With everything looking up now, I am excited to work on getting Eléonore noticed and to have her story entertain readers.

To celebrate a month of being published and the recent release of the physical copy, I thought it would be a good idea to host a giveaway! It’s open until January 12th! (that’s a week tomorrow!)

If you’re interested, just follow the link below:

It’s the Day! Eléonore (An Iníonaofa Novella) has Launched!

Happy Sunday friends 🙂

Today was the release date for Eléonore! I can still hardly believe that she’s finally published and out in the world.

It’s been such a crazy rush leading up to today! I’m planning to share my self-publishing journey with you.

I spoke a bit about it today during the weekly #storycrafter chat on twitter which Faye (@Writerology) was kind enough to let me co-host!

It was such fun to interact and engage with the writing community. If ever you’re free on Sundays at 3PM EST, you should definitely check it out!

I just want to extend my gratitude again to all of you who have supported me. I feel like Eléonore has been the product of a few years of work, and yet she was only conceived in August! I have many of you to thank for inspiring me to this moment.

My goal was to be published before my 26th bday. And it is a goal achieved! Today’s release was an early birthday gift from past me to tomorrow me!

I just want to take this moment now to say to you friends: I hope that you continue to pursue your dreams. Don’t let anyone stand in your way. Especially yourself. I shared these thoughts today during the chat:

Don’t reject yourselves, friends! Believe in yourself and trust that you’ll know when the time is right for you to share your story with the world.

If you’re interested in urban fantasy, I hope you check out this little novella. But let me give you a piece of advice. If you prefer a paperback copy like myself, wait until it releases mid-December (if you do, you’ll get the ebook free!) If you prefer the ebook though, here’s the Amazon. com link: Eléonore (An Iníonaofa Novella)

Eléonore | Book Playlist

Happy Thursday Friends,

It’s December 1st. Hard to believe we’re only a few weeks away from the end of 2016.

With Eléonore releasing this Sunday, I’m taking the liberty to share some trivia and excerpts with you.

Today, I’ve decided to share the playlist that I have created for it.

I filled the first third of the drive to Quebec City with tunes on my dad’s tapes and reminisced on the past. The combination of memories of old days hunting demons with him and sappy ‘80s ballads were enough to ease my frayed nerves. In its place, rose a nostalgic sentiment that dulled my senses.

I already have plans for a second volume for the next book, but that’s me getting ahead of myself ;P

Eléonore Release Date and ARCs!

Happy Tuesday friends!

I’m changing up my normal posts this week to bring you a very special announcement. I have set a release date for Eléonore.

DECEMBER 4TH 2016!

That’s right. A little less than two weeks. But everything’s come together so very well and I can’t hold back any longer. Plus, it will be like an early birthday present for me.

It still feels wholly surreal to me. I can’t believe that I’ll finally be published. Like many of you, it’s been a dream a long time in the making. To see it finally realized… well, I’m actually tearing up thinking about it, so that’s what it means to me 💗

But enough about me! Because today’s post is also about you. My readers. My friends. You have been a great support and encouragement for me through this past year and I am grateful for every kind word and gesture that has kept me moving in this direction. With American Thanksgiving drawing near, I feel it apropos to express the gratitude I have for each of you. I am blessed. Truly blessed.

If everything works well, I will have Eléonore up for pre-order by the end of the weekend. It will only be available as an e-book to start, with the paperback going up for sale later in the month.

Before wrapping up this post, I also want to say that I’m offering Advance Reader Copies for my novella. If you’re at all interested in getting a copy now in exchange for an honest review, feel free to leave a comment below or DM me on twitter (faith_therivens) or send me an e-mail at faithrivens.writer(at)gmail.com. I’ll be sending those out by Friday latest.

Here’s the blurb again:

Eléonore Blurb Reveal

Hi friends 🙂

It’s late Sunday evening here, and I have to admit that it’s been a rather dismal weekend. I intend to make sure this new week is a better one.

This post will be a brief one. Its purpose is to, as promised, present the blurb for my novella, Eléonore.

I finished my final edits and am sending it off to a proofreader tomorrow. Meanwhile, I’m waiting for another draft of my cover. Hopefully I’ll be able to reveal that this week!

That December release is looking ever more probable!

Now, to the blurb!
