MAY TBR

Hi friends,

It’s May 10th, so this is coming later than it probably should, but I thought I’d share the reads I have lined up for this month.

I might be a little overambitious though…

I’ve managed to finish three of these so far:

Beauty by Robin McKinley ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ.5
I loved this story so much! The prose was excellent and gleamed with all the potential that McKinley honed after this, her debut. Where the story lacked was in stakes and adequate development of the romance. That being said, the characterization of Beauty and Beast were phenomenal! As Beauty and the Beast retellings go, this has to be a favourite of mine.

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ.5
I have only read ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ by Atwood which is something I need to rectify this year. Honestly, she’s such an amazing author. This little gem is the retelling of ‘The Odyssey’ from Penelope’s perspective and the voice in it was off the charts! Humourous, witty and a compelling narrative. It’s purpose felt more thematic so the plot itself wasn’t driven by stakes or action. But a small quibble because Penelope’s characterization was phenomenal!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
I finished this one two days ago and it is a new favourite of mine. I fell in love with the prose, the worldbuilding, the premise, the setting, the layered plot, the twist. All the love for this amazing fantasy book that used so many of my favourite elements. I could imagine Guillermo del Toro doing something amazing with this book if he was the one adapting it into a movie! Also, Karou has to be one of my favourite heroines too. My only problem is that I want to binge read the rest of the series but I don’t have book 2 or 3 so I have to wait. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

At the moment, I have about 50 pages left in Hell’s Teeth by James Fahy. If you’ve been following me long enough, you might remember that I’ve read his other series. An MG fantasy highly reminiscent of Tolkien and Lewis, it’s been one of my favourite reads this year. Well, this new series I’ve discovered is a darker urban fantasy and oh so wonderful! Set in a dystopian world with vampires and featuring a kickass (pardon my French) protagonist, Hell’s Teeth proves that Fahy is a versatile author and a master storyteller.

I’m still working my way through Women Who Run with Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estรฉs. I had started this nonfiction in April after finishing early with Stephen King’s On Writing and I’m hoping to be finished it this month which will mean that I’m 5 for 5 for my nonfiction reads this year. So far, I’m really enjoying the psychological perspective that she’s applying to myths and the empowering virtues it conveys for women.

Not sure what I’ll read next. Firebringer is a reread so I turn to that. But I really want to read Nevernight and Eon soon. And I was supposed to readย Norse Mythologyย last month but didn’t get to it. The Hatter’s Wife is a novella which promises to be fun and quick so I’ll probably save it for a light read between two big ones. And then there’s Named of the Dragon which is the only book that isn’t a fantasy on my list…. Hmm…?

Any suggestions ๐Ÿ™‚

What’s on your TBR this month, friends? Share and let me know what you’ve been reading lately!

  1. Such a great TBR! I have quite a few waiting for me to be read as well… And great news you enjoyed Daughter Of Smoke & Bone; I personally loved the beginning and the descriptions, but the romance kind of ruined it for me. I hope you will be able to get the sequels soon! Have a lovely month and happy reading!

    1. I’m glad you think so ๐Ÿ™‚ When the romance first peeked its head I was unsure about how I’d feel because I prefer my romance in the down-low but something about this one worked for me.
Hope you have a lovely month as well โค

  2. This is a wonderful list! Have you read Sunshine by McKinley. I read it years ago and it still makes me smile whenever I think of it. I’m ashamed to say I still haven’t read The Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, but it’s at the top of my tbd. I am however a little over halfway through her new book, Strange the Dreamer, and I can say it’s one of my favorite reads so far this year! I’d love to hear what you think of Nevernight. I had a couple of issues with it, but overall I really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to the sequel.

    1. I’m rather happy with it too ๐Ÿ™‚
I haven’t read Sunshine yet but I have it at home with a few others. I’m hoping to read it later this year, closer to the fall — I hear there are vampires ๐Ÿ™‚
I’m excited to read Strange the Dreamer — I hear wonderful things! I hope you get a chance to read DoSaB soon ๐Ÿ™‚
Just started Nevernight last night and I am in love so far. ๐Ÿ™‚
      Take care โค

    1. I just started last night Kay and I am in love with the voice and style and Mia!! I read a lot of Pratchett who also used footnotes so I’m not minding them too much here, but I can understand how they might be frustration ;P

  3. So so SO happy to hear you loved Daughter of Smoke & Bone! It’s one of my favorite YA fantasies ever, and Laini Taylor one of my favorite authors of all time. So I hope you enjoy the rest of the series once you get to it. Personally, I loved Book #2 (Days of Blood and Starlight) almost as much as DoSaB, and thought that Book #3 (Dreams of Gods and Monsters) was OK but drawn out. Hope you enjoy Eon and Norse Mythology as well!

I’d really like to check out Robin McKinley’s and Margaret Atwood’s work at some point. (I’ve never read The Handmaid’s Tale – and now I feel a bit embarrassed about that.) And I can’t see the Instagram photo right now (I think it’s blocked at my current location), so I’m curious about Firebringer. What is that one about? And who wrote it?

For my May TBR, I’m almost done with Roshani Chokshi’s A Crown of Wishes, and then it’s on to Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Apprentice. ๐Ÿ˜€ Very excited to finally read that one! Not sure what the rest of the month will bring reading-wise yet, but we’ll see.

    1. Thanks Sara! I can understand why Laini is one of your favourite authors! I’ve ordered the other two and they should be in in time for June ๐Ÿ™‚
I also finished Norse Mythology last night! Norse Mythology + Neil Gaiman = MAGIC โค
I highly recommend McKinley. Her prose is divine. And I need to read more Atwood too. I read Handmaid's Tale back in high school — I'm hoping to reread it next month.

Firebringer is a book I read when I was maybe 10 or 11 by David Clement-Davies. The main character is a young buck named Rannoch who is destined to lead the deer to freedom. I haven't read Watership Down (something I hope to rectifiy soon) but I know people compare the two. Here's the link if you're interested to it's goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58087.Fire_Bringer?ac=1&from_search=true

I saw on Goodreads that A Crown of Wishes wasn't to par with The Star-Touched Queen, but I hope you enjoy Assassin's Apprentice! I read that series a few years back and fell in love with Hobb.

      Happy Reading ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Ah, so you might be binge-finishing the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series? ๐Ÿ˜‰ That’s what I did with Books #2 and #3, and it was a great decision. And yay for Norse Mythology!

Hmmmm, Fire Bringer sounds interesting. I’m not sure if it’s quite my thing, but I’ll keep it in mind.

Yeah, A Crown of Wishes was just OK for me. I’d still read more of Roshani Chokshi’s work, but this one felt too overwritten in parts. But yes, I’m liking Assassin’s Apprentice quite a bit. Fitz has just received his first assignment, and I’m both intrigued and terrified at how it’ll go.

      2. I definitely am binge-finishing it ๐Ÿ™‚
Hope you enjoy the rest of Assassin’s Apprentice. I went through most of that book worried for that poor Fitz โค

      3. I am enjoying it! And I’m knee-deep in worry for Fitz right now. Galen is about to send him somewhere for his Trial, and I have a bad feeling about what’s going to happen. *tries not to bite her fingernails*

  4. Great TBR list! I also have Nevernight this month, got around few pages already and loving it more and more! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m interested with Daughter of Smoke and Bone too but I think it’ll have to wait until next month. ๐Ÿ˜€
Good luck with your TBR. โค

  5. Oh I absolutely ADORE Daughter of Smoke and Bone too!! The prose is just so gorgeous and luscious. ๐Ÿ˜ #writersgoals And I’m actually reading her Strange the Dreamer right now too and I think it’s EVEN BETTER (if that’s possible haha). I hope you love the other books left on your TBR!! Best of luck chewing through all of these. :’)

    1. It’s the kind of prose that makes me jealous as a writer and ask: “Now, why can’t I write like that?” And then I remember, “Because I write like Faith Rivens!” ๐Ÿ˜‰
I’m excited to get to Strange the Dreamer once I’m done this trilogy. Have you read her other series as well, the Dreamdark one?
Thanks for taking the time to comment, my dear!
      Happy Reading ๐Ÿ˜€

  6. Great list, you always have so many interesting books on your TBR. Out of my genre, but that’s okay. That’s why they’re interesting. I’m hoping to read the 3rd book in a civil war historical series, called Refiner’s Fire, and then there is also several beta reads I’m finishing up. I have a slew of books I WANT to read right now, that cost money and aren’t available at libraries, but my lack of funds won’t allow me to buy books for a while here. I have a ton of books I have picked up for free due to some sale or another on kindle and through blog/news letters, so I’m piicking my way through those lol.. There are a lot.

Cheers my friend, I hope you have a great rest of the month. Can’t really believe it’s halfway over already!
