Happy Monday Everyone 🙂

Hope you’re all in fine spirits. The warm weather is returning here again, but that’s okay! We have A/C now!

This week has been a bit of a busy one. With the A/C people coming in, we had to move a few things around and a few commitments meant less time for working on my writing, but even then things got accomplished. Here are some of the highlights from this week…

#WIPjoy:

I mentioned last week about #WIPjoy being a month long event celebrating our works in progress. These are some of the standouts of mine from this past week:

My Writing:

I’ve gotten through the first six chapters of my first draft of Heritage and I’ve made a BIG change! What is it you ask? Well, I’ve decided to change my point of view from 3rd person omniscient to first person (Peggie’s)!

I think that deserves the word ‘big’, don’t you? 😉

Honestly, the biggest thing for me is not having to go through my MS with a toothcomb, because let’s me honest, that’s a good job as is. The big thing for me, and many of you might remember this, is that I’m not very comfortable writing in first person. The intimacy is something that’s always scared me. But, reflecting on this MS, I know that it has to be an intimate narrative, told from Peggie’s POV. So I’m making the change, and so far, it’s looking fairly decent!

Book Review | High Rise

MOVIES:

  1. I finally made it to theatres to watch Captain America: Civil War and was completely blown away by it. Having low expectations really made the viewing enoyable. Plus, the Russo brothers are phenomenal behind the camera 🙂
  2. Rewatched one of my favourite films: Rushmore (dir. Wes Anderson). Anderson is also one of my favourite directors. He has such a quirky vision and his characters are always unique creations.
  3. Ruby Sparks. (dir. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris). I’ve been meaning to watch this movie for some time, and I have to say that I was impressed by Kazan’s story. It was an atypical film, though far from perfect. Also Kazan and Dano are so great together. They bring believability to each scene they’re in.
  4. Tony Awards: James Corden. Lin-Manuel Miranda. Hamilton. ❤

HOPING FOR PEACE:

I was initially going to do a separate post for this, but I’m putting it here instead with the hopes that you’ll read it during your perusal of it.

This past weekend has been marred by much tragedy. First with the senseless death of Christina Grimmie on Friday evening and then the mass shooting at the club in Orlando early Sunday morning.

In both events, life was destroyed. In both events, fear and hatred and confusion are often the responses. It is important to grieve. It is important to say that these tragedies aren’t right, that they aren’t fair. No one deserves to play God and decide when someone’s life should end. Whatever the reason.

In the aftermath of such shocking and horrible occurrences, let us not forget to embrace love. Let us use these moments as teachable ones, to inspire people to be open towards diversity in all aspects of life, to remind people to respect each other. Let us not retaliate or lay blame and hatred at the feet of others. Let us not return discrimination with further discrimination. Only through love can peace be truly achieved.

Those are my beliefs. Do with them what you will.

But I offer you all peace and pray for a world where we may all be united, no matter race, creed, sexuality, gender, age, etc. Stay safe. And don’t stop living. Find the courage to do what is right and open your hearts to the love that I know exists in this world.

  1. First-person is great. It allows you to say things you want to say out loud. And if someone’s offended, you can just point to the character and say, “I didn’t say it, she said it.”

    I loved Captain America as well. Just yesterday, though, I watched Cats & Dogs. Totally enjoyable film.

    Well said, Hoping For Peace. It’s a shame that it only takes one person to have such a negative effect on so many. It’s more of a shame that politicians only use such tragedy to attempt to push their personal agendas rather than say, “Hey, we need to drop these stupid labels we give ourselves, stop playing our power-grab games, and come together and be human beings long enough to really solve this problem that everyone needs us to figure out.” We can do it if we’re willing to.

    1. Cats & Dogs brings back so many memories! It’s been a while since I watched it but I remember enjoying it alot!
      Thank you! It’s also a shame that we have short memories. These incidents keep happening. We keep getting angered that they do, but then time passes and we forget… until it happens again.
      Just have to keep hoping that someday a change will come. I believe it will!

  2. I’m glad to hear your WIP is coming along, especially after going through such a big change! It’s good you were able to figure out which POV fit your story best. Love the tweets excerpts!
    I didn’t realize #WIPjoy continued through other months. Is it for every month of the year?
    Looking at your tweets here, I’m curious how you got your WIP’s lines in a photo for each tweet. What program did you use?

    1. Thanks so much 🙂
      I think #WIPjoy usually takes place every second month… don’t quote me on that, though ;P
      I just take a screenshot of my page and then open it up in Paint. Then I select the section I want, copy it and paste it into the body of the tweet. I don’t know if there’s another way to do it, but that’s how I do 🙂

  4. Yay for air conditioning! 🙂 Doesn’t it make life so much easier in the summer?

    Wow. Moving from third-person POV to first-person is a huge change. But sometimes it’s necessary (I did the same with TKC), and it can be done. And it sounds like the change is working for you so far. Go get ’em, Faith!

    I still can’t believe what happened in Orlando. It’s just… sad and… I don’t know, it defies words at this point. I wrote a response to the Paris shootings last year, and what I felt then is what I feel again for Orlando. No one deserves to die or be killed because of who they are. It’s senseless. I know I can do my part by practicing compassion with everyone, and I can only hope it makes a difference somehow.

      How did the move from 3rd to 1st POV work for you? Any advice to offer? 😉
      Your words are moving Sara! It is terrible.
      I feel that we keep falling into a pattern. Something bad happens. Our emotions rage. People promise change. Time passes. We forget. Something bad happens again….I hope we can find a way out of the cycle.

      1. Tips for switching from 3rd person to 1st person… Um…. Gosh, that was so long ago now. This goes back all the way to the first draft, when I was struggling with 3rd person and unsure of whether I was getting as close to Eva as I wanted to. Making the switch was the right choice in the end… but like I said, that was a while ago now.

        If I had to give one tip, I’d say to not be afraid of feeling what your character feels and thinking what she thinks. Emotions and mindset are crucial to pulling off 1st person – and that requires bravery. The rest of it will come with practice and careful consideration on your part as the author.

      2. Thanks for sharing the tidbit! It’s definitely what has kept me from trying first pov in the first place! I’m going through the draft slowly, just to catch moments where I need to change pronouns and other minor fixes, then I’ll jump into properly exploring Peggie’s mind 🙂

      3. Great! One more tip, if that’s OK: Be careful with how much of that exploration you share on the page. Sometimes we can go overboard and put it all on the page… I don’t know about you, but when I read a story and the author tends to go on and on with what their character’s thinking at that moment, it makes me lose interest briefly. So, again, be mindful of that bit. 😉

  5. I need to go see Capetian America! I’ve heard so many awesome things about this movie.
    I don’t really like writing in first person either. It’s weird and I feel too limited. I feel like there’s more leeway for certain things. Particular writing styles. Even deep into a limited third person POV is easier for me. But its your story and you know it best. Good luck with the change and I am sure it will work out well.

    I agree with the thoughts on Orlando. I’m kind of on overload of so many people posting thoughts about it. It’s horrible and awful and I can’t imagine anything except an evil spirit that would compell someone to go shoot a massive amount of people like that. I saw an interesting post on Facebook, a video montage of all the faces of those who died, which I thought was touching.

    Another thing that happened this week that horrified me was that some pastor in the city I live in made some awful hateful remarks regarding the orlando shooting. I am appalled that anyone that calls themselves a pastor, a leader of a christian church, would publicly say such terrible things. I’m relieved that the Sacramento pastor fellowship has denounced these remarks and many other churches around town have also denounced such remarks. But overall, I’m just hurt by this because it paints Christians in such a negative light. How can we show the love of God to other people, and how will other people believe us, when Christian leaders do this?

      I hope you get a chance to see Captain America, because it really is fantastic!
      Your point about Christians leaders is so poignant! It’s terrible when priests fail to uphold the Christian values because they end up painting a bad picture of our faith. We have to remember that priests are just as fallible as the rest of us, only humans who are as capable of erring. We have to continue to represent God as best as we can, to be the light to the world, to spread love and compassion. ❤

  6. That’s a huge change! I don’t often write in 1st person either. Every time I try I fall back into 3rd person really quickly 😛

    We’ve been meaning to see Captain America for weeks!! I’m not even sure if it’s still on in our cinema, it seems like ages ago that we said we’d see it. I work until 7pm, so there’s never much time for it.

    I’ve been really bad at the #WIPjoy thing :/ I never seem to have the time for it in the morning since I’d need to find a suitable line, edit it in photoshop and save it, and all that :/

    Yay!! I’m glad your AC got fixed and you’re not boiling alive 😀 Meanwhile, there’s a thunderstorm happening right now, right above my library 😛

    Honestly, I don’t know what’s going on in this world anymore. There’s so much hate crime happening I’ve stopped reading the news because there’s barely anything but.

    1. Thanks for your comments, Sarina! Don’t worry about #WIPjoy. This is the first month where I’ve actually made a conscious effort to do it and, on top of everything else, it can be a struggle some days ;P
      Working until 7pm must be exhausting! Do you start early in the morning as well?

  7. After so many attempts in short stories I have never found myself comfortable as a first person writer either. But I have no doubt you will pull it off in spectacular fashion 🙂 You are an amazing writer and I learn so much from you everytime I read a post that it will all be great!

    I love the Rushmore film and it has been so long since I watched it. You have reminded me to go dust it off. I still haven’t watched Captain America: Civil War or Ruby Sparks yet but they are on the list to watch.

  8. That is quite a big change for your WIP. I have experimented with first person before with one of my other WIPs. I actually like both but prefer third.
    Glad to see your A/C is fixed.
    This is one of the reasons I hate seeing or reading the news. It’s terrible the things people do and there will always be hatred in this world. I do believe in standing up for what’s wright and being accepting of others. I also don’t believe in blaming an entire race or religion for one’s action. It’s wrong. Thank you for your kind words. 🙂
